The multiverse is one of the most important elements of the Marvel Universe, which has recently become a topic of discussion among fans. This can happen because the Marvel Cinematic Universe has just introduced the concept through various shows. Including Spider-Man: No Way Home which has presented three Peter Parkers at once in one film. Interestingly, when it comes to the multiverse and Spider-Man, Marvel fans will immediately remember the Spider-Verse.
Although the MCU itself hasn’t clearly presented the Spider-Verse, the fact is that if Spider-Man experiences a multiverse event, then it is most likely related to the Spider-Verse. As happened in the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and also in the Marvel Comics version of the ‘Spider-Verse’ story. Unfortunately, despite its popularity, details regarding the origins of the Spider-Verse remain a mystery among fans, at least to this day. Because Marvel Comics just made it clear through the new comic Edge of the Spider-Verse #2.
The Origins of the Spider-Verse in the Marvel Universe
One Edge of the Spider-Verse #2 story titled ‘A Single Thread’, by Dan Slott, Paco Medina, and Brian Reber, has just revealed the origins of spider webs as well as the Spider-Verse. The net is Neith, the elder goddess of Earth-001 who is the son of Gaea and Oshtur. It all started when Gaea and Osthur assigned Neith’s sister, Shathra, to design a ‘heavenly map’ that would later determine the workings of human destiny.
It was at this point that Shathra made a beehive to become a symbol of human destiny. On the other hand, Neith proposed his spider web design so that humans have more free will. After placing the web in the center of the universe, Neith then ordered the spider to monitor and repair the web if anything was broken. It is from this web that the destiny of the Spider-Totems and humanity as a whole is born that is connected to the Spider-Verse.
By revealing the origin of the Spider-Verse, Marvel indirectly wants to explain that Spider-Man has an important role in human destiny. They are spider humans who are symbols of the relationship between humans and the web of destiny. Their main task is probably the same as Neith’s spider, which is to monitor and repair the broken ‘destiny’ with its power.
